Maureen Verrall

BACP

My counselling training covered both psychodynamic and person centred disciplines. My practice is largely led by the psychodynamic tradition which guides my thinking about what is happening in my counselling relationships with clients, although other disciplines are also influences.

My aim is to provide a safe, secure space and to develop an honest, trustful relationship providing warmth and responsiveness within which an individual can explore any issue knowing they will be accepted, respected and understood. From personal and professional experience I believe it is the quality of the counselling relationship and the process of using the unique interpersonal dynamics within it that can develop our understanding of our ways of being and behaving. From my own experience I know that working towards change through this process can be difficult and that the direction and pace can only be set by the individual. As a partner in that process my aim is to support people as they reflect on how past relationships and experiences are playing out in the present, explore differences and contradictions within their internal and external worlds and nurture their hopes of finding what they need now.

I have provided individual counselling in the voluntary sector at PF Counselling and in the public sector in GP practices. I have worked with people experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, bereavement, loss, abuse, fear, relationship problems, lost direction and drive. I have also worked as a facilitator in group therapy at Changes CHP. Before becoming a counsellor I worked in the public sector on a wide range of issues, latterly dealing with social policy on children and families.

I qualified at Edinburgh University achieving a distinction in the Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling. I am a member of the BACP.
